Weather in Ayia Napa: what shapes it and what to expect
The weather in Ayia Napa is shaped by the sea: it softens winter nights but adds humidity to the summer heat. In August, days average 33°C, and the rain falls mostly in the colder part of the year.
01What shapes the weather in Ayia Napa
Ayia Napa lies in the south-east of Cyprus, where rocky stretches of coast alternate with sandy beaches near Cape Greco. The nearby sea holds back the summer heat and keeps the winters mild. In July, days here average 33°C, compared with 38°C in Nicosia. In the capital, in the middle of the island, the sea has less influence, so the summer heat is stronger. You can feel the difference on a trip from Ayia Napa to Nicosia, even within a single summer day.
In January the average night-time temperature in Ayia Napa is 9°C, against 6°C in Nicosia. Sea water cools more slowly than land and softens the night-time drop in temperature near the shore. Winter clothing here is more about cool evenings and damp weather than frost. Frost and snow are almost unknown on the Ayia Napa coast.
02What each season brings
Summer heat in Ayia Napa comes with dry weather: July gets an average of just 1 mm of rain. There may be no rain to bring relief from the hot sun. The open sandy beaches and rocky stretches of coast offer little natural shade. From April to September the midday UV index usually reaches 7 or higher, so for long spells outdoors you need sunscreen and a hat, and the lunch break is best spent in the shade.
In the colder part of the year there can be heavy showers with thunderstorms. December is the wettest month, with an average of 87 mm. In winter strong winds can whip up waves, and rainy weather feels especially harsh by the sea. On such a day, a waterproof, windproof jacket is the right thing to wear down to the water. Sometimes the air turns hazy with dust carried from the deserts: distant views lose their sharpness and the sky looks dull. This haze can appear even when no rain falls locally, the Ayia Napa coast included.
03Wind, humidity and how the heat feels
Near the sea the summer air is more humid, so the heat in Ayia Napa can feel heavier than the temperature alone suggests. Inland the air is drier, although the days there are hotter. Even after sunset a summer evening by the water can stay muggy; August nights here are warm on average, with no sharp drop in temperature.
During the day the breeze from the sea brings cooler air and changes how the beach feels. When it dies down, the same temperature feels more stifling. The "feels like" value takes temperature, humidity and wind into account together. That is why the same thermometer reading on different summer days in Ayia Napa can come with noticeably different levels of mugginess by the sea.
04How Ayia Napa compares with other towns in Cyprus
In July, Ayia Napa is about as warm as Larnaca, cooler than Limassol and warmer than Paphos. On a beach in Paphos the summer heat is usually less intense, and back in Ayia Napa you may want to put off an evening outing until sunset. Winter nights here are milder than in Larnaca, the same on average as in Paphos, but cooler than in Limassol.
Ayia Napa gets 352 mm of rain a year. That is less than Limassol, Paphos and Troodos, and slightly more than Larnaca and Nicosia. Among the towns on this site, Ayia Napa ranks fourth for annual rainfall; most of it falls in the cold season.
05The months at a glance
The warmest month in Ayia Napa is August, with an average daytime temperature of 33°C. The coldest by night-time temperature is February, at an average of 8°C. The rainy season runs from October to March, and the wettest month is December. For long spells outdoors at this time of year you need clothes for cool, wet weather, even if the sun comes out during the day.
Judging by water temperature, the comfortable swimming season runs from May to November. The sea is warmest in August, at an average of 29°C. In autumn the water holds its warmth for a long time, and in spring it warms up more slowly than the daytime air. You can read more about seasonal conditions in Ayia Napa on the "Month" page.
