Weather in Troodos: what shapes it and what to expect

The weather in Troodos is cooler and wetter than on the coast: the area gets 791 mm of precipitation a year. There is snow in winter, and on a summer evening you may need a warm jumper.

01What shapes the weather in Troodos

Troodos lies in the mountainous centre of Cyprus, near Mount Olympus, the island's highest peak. The MET Norway forecast point is at an altitude of about 1,710 m. Air cools as it rises, so it is cooler here than by the sea. The mountain slopes force moist air upwards, which helps clouds and rain to form. So the coast can be under clear skies while Troodos is grey and overcast.

The long-term figures for the area come from the Prodromos station in the Troodos Mountains (1,380 m). The forecast point is higher, and that difference also affects the temperature. Troodos does not get the direct softening effect of the sea that the coastal towns have. In winter the altitude makes snow possible, and shifting cloud and incoming rain can change the weather quickly, even during a short outing into the mountains.

02What each season brings

In winter, precipitation in Troodos can fall as snow. With January averages of 6°C by day and 1°C at night, a thaw can give way to a freeze, especially after sunset. Roads can be icy, and wet steps and stone paths can ice over. For winter walks here you need footwear with a deep-tread sole. Low cloud on the mountainside wraps the area in fog, and visibility can drop even before any rain arrives.

In the warm season, downpours with thunderstorms are possible. Air heated during the day rises and cools, allowing large storm clouds to build, and in a downpour water can run quickly down the slopes. Summer nights are also different from the warm days: in July nights average 18°C. The difference between day and night is noticeable even in dry weather, when you will want a jumper for dinner outdoors. Early summer mornings in Troodos can be cool too.

03Wind, humidity and how the temperature feels

Even with average February daytime temperatures of 7°C, the wind in Troodos can make it feel noticeably colder. On exposed mountain ground it adds to the chill, while the pine forest gives some shelter. The terrain changes the strength of the wind, so on a single walk conditions in the open and among the trees can be quite different.

The "feels like" line shows how the temperature feels once weather factors, including the wind, are taken into account. In winter, a value below the air temperature means a sharper chill, and a windproof jacket is the right choice. In Troodos a tightly woven outer layer is especially useful on exposed ground: a thick jumper on its own can let the wind through.

04How Troodos compares with other towns in Cyprus

Of the Cypriot towns on this site, Troodos is the coolest in summer. For comparison, a July day in Limassol reaches 34°C on average, and in Paphos 30°C. After a day on the beach, the mountain cool is especially noticeable, so up here you will need to swap summer beachwear for clothes suited to cooler weather. There is no sea in Troodos itself; people go down to the coast to swim.

Winter nights here are also the coldest of any of these towns; in Limassol a January night averages 11°C. Troodos also gets more precipitation than the others, with 791 mm a year. If you come up from a coastal town in winter, you may need warmer clothes and waterproof footwear.

05The months at a glance

The warmest month in Troodos is July, with average daytime temperatures of 28°C. The coldest month for night-time temperatures is February, averaging 0°C. In the long-term averages, February is the month that sits right at the frost line. Snow falls in the mountains in winter, and skiing on the slopes of Mount Olympus depends on when it settles.

Going by monthly totals, the rainy season runs from October to June. December is the wettest month, with 170 mm on average. Even the driest part of the year is not completely free of rain here, so a summer trip into the mountains can also run into rain.
