Weather in Limassol: what shapes it and what to expect
Limassol combines a mild coastal winter with a hot summer: in August the average daytime temperature is 34°C. Humidity from the sea makes the heat feel stronger, and most of the rain falls in the cooler half of the year.
01What shapes the weather in Limassol
Limassol stretches along Akrotiri Bay on the south coast of Cyprus, with the slopes of the Troodos Mountains rising behind the town. The sea warms up and cools down slowly, so it takes the edge off the summer heat and holds on to warmth in winter. Inland, the contrast between day and night is sharper: in the capital, Nicosia, summers are hotter and winter nights colder. In Limassol even a January day warms up to 18°C on average.
In spring a sunny day can already feel like summer, even though the water is still cool. In April the average daytime temperature is 23°C, while the sea has only warmed to 19°C. Because of this gap, it is cooler by the water than on a sunlit street in town. If you plan to sit by the sea for a long time in spring, wear something that covers your shoulders. Frost is very rare on the Limassol coast, and so is snow.
02What each season brings
Summer heat in Limassol comes with almost no rain: according to long-term records, July gets 0 mm. Cloud does not always bring the relief you hope for, especially when it is humid. From April to September the midday UV index usually reaches 7 or higher. Even with a light breeze, you need a hat and sunscreen if you are outside for long; anything that has to be done in direct sun is best moved from midday to the morning.
In the cooler half of the year there can be thundery downpours. December is the wettest month, with an average of 100 mm. In winter storms, strong wind can whip up waves and drive rain sideways under awnings, so by the sea a raincoat that fastens up is more practical. When the air brings dust from the deserts, a dust haze can set in: the sky turns dull and distant outlines lose their sharpness. This haze can occur without rain, and the dust may settle on balcony furniture and windows around Limassol.
03Wind, humidity and how the heat feels
In summer the sea air adds humidity, so the heat in Limassol can feel heavier than the temperature suggests. Inland, the summer heat is drier. During the day the sea breeze brings some relief, but the coastal air stays humid. In a sheltered corner with no breeze, the same temperature feels different from a place where the air moves freely between buildings.
The "feels like" figure accounts for the way humidity and wind change how warm or cold it seems. The difference from the thermometer reading is most noticeable in humid heat or in cool, windy weather. Evenings in Limassol can stay muggy too: in August the average night-time temperature is 25°C, so an open window does not always cool the room much.
04How Limassol compares with other towns in Cyprus
Among the towns of Cyprus, only Nicosia has a hotter July than Limassol. In Paphos the average daytime temperature that month is 30°C and in Larnaca 33°C, so a summer day in Limassol is usually hotter. Beach time here is best kept for the morning or the late afternoon. Limassol has the mildest winter nights of the towns compared here; an evening trip up to the Troodos Mountains needs warmer clothes than a walk around town.
For rainfall, too, Limassol is second only to the Troodos Mountains: it gets 408 mm a year, against 791 mm in the mountains. Paphos, Larnaca, Nicosia, Ayia Napa and Protaras are all drier. In winter, waterproof shoes and a waterproof coat make sense in Limassol even when the air is fairly warm.
05The months at a glance
The warmest month in Limassol is August, with an average daytime temperature of 34°C, and the coldest is January, with nights averaging 11°C. The rainy season runs from November to March. This is the time of year when waterproof clothing is most useful: long walks around town or outdoor work may well happen in the rain.
Going by the water temperature, the comfortable swimming season lasts from May to December, when the sea is at least 21°C. The water is warmest in August, at 28°C on average. In autumn the sea holds on to its stored heat for a long time and stays warmer than the night air.
