Ayia Napa weather in November: what to expect

November weather in Ayia Napa still allows swimming: the sea stays at around 23°C. Days average 22°C and nights 13°C, and there is more rain than in October.

01What the weather is like in Ayia Napa in November

Long-term data show that November in Ayia Napa averages 22°C by day and 13°C at night. The daytime warmth is still fine for long walks, but it gets cool after sunset. The month brings 45 mm of rain: rain plays a bigger part in the weather than in October, although dry spells continue too.

The sea averages 23°C, so yes, you can still swim comfortably in November. The water is cooler than in October but stays warmer than the average daytime air. This month a beach holiday can still be combined with walks around the town.

Compared with October, it gets cooler both by day and at night, and there is more rain. This is the start of the wetter part of the year, and the rain is far from over. In December it gets cooler still, and there is noticeably more rain than in November: the monthly total almost doubles.

02November in Ayia Napa and other towns in Cyprus

In November, days in Ayia Napa are slightly cooler than in Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos. Nights here are warmer than in the capital and the same as in Larnaca and Paphos. There is a little more rain than in Nicosia and Larnaca, but less than in Paphos.

Limassol is warmer both by day and at night, but gets more rain. Compared with the Troodos Mountains, Ayia Napa is much warmer around the clock and has less rain.

03What to wear and what to do

For a warm day, a T-shirt or a long-sleeved shirt will do; for the evening, bring a jumper and long trousers, as summer clothes are no longer enough after sunset. A light waterproof windcheater is useful by the sea, where the wind can add a chill, and in the rain. For walks, choose closed shoes with soles that do not slip on wet stone.

At Nissi Beach, swim during the sunny part of the day and have a towel and dry clothes ready for when you come out. In clear weather use sunscreen, and take a hat on a long walk. November's moderate daytime warmth makes this a good month for a walk at Cape Greco. Go during the day so you can take in the rocky coastline before the evening chill sets in.

What the climate of Ayia Napa is like

Ayia Napa lies in the south-east of Cyprus, where sandy beaches alternate with stretches of rocky coast near Cape Greco. Summers here are long, hot and dry, and winters are short, mild and wet. The town gets 352 mm of rain a year, most of it in December, when the total reaches 87 mm. The rainy period lasts from October to March, and from June to September there is almost no rain. In these dry months rain rarely gets in the way of your plans for the day.

The sea smooths out temperature extremes: summer days are not as hot as in Nicosia, the capital, in the middle of the island, and winter nights are milder. The coast is much warmer and drier than the Troodos Mountains. July in Ayia Napa is as hot as in Larnaca, hotter than in Paphos and a little cooler than in Limassol. Annual rainfall is close to Larnaca's.

Sea temperature in Ayia Napa by month

The sea off Ayia Napa is warmest in August, when the water reaches 29°C. It is coolest in February, at about 17°C. For most people the comfortable swimming season runs from May to November. At the start of it the sea is still refreshing: in May the water is 22°C. If it is warm water and long swims you are after, choose summer or early autumn. In spring the water can feel cool after a sunny day, so your first trip to the beach is easy to combine with a walk along the shore.

Autumn brings a different mix: the air gradually cools while the sea slowly gives back the heat it stored over the summer. In October the water is still around 26°C, and in November around 23°C. In autumn the sea is warmer than the night air, whereas in spring the daytime warmth runs ahead of the sea. For a late-season holiday with swimming, keep in mind that the rain returns, and leave room in your schedule for the beach on dry days.

Ayia Napa weather by season

Winter in Ayia Napa is short and mild: in February the average is 16°C by day and 8°C at night. Frost and snow are almost unknown on the coast, but the cold part of the year brings the most rain. It can feel damp outdoors, especially if you spend a long time by the sea. For winter outings, take a waterproof jacket that keeps out the wind off the sea. In spring the days quickly get warmer and the rain gradually eases off. March is still part of the rainy period, while April and May are noticeably drier. The evenings stay cool even after a sunny day. In spring, wear a long-sleeved shirt that you can roll up during the day and roll down after sunset.

The summer heat lasts beyond the calendar summer and into September. In August the average daytime temperature reaches 33°C and nights stay around 24°C, so the evenings are warm too. Rain is unlikely at this time, and daytime activities are best moved to the morning. A light linen shirt and shorts are right for a summer day. With the UV index very high to extreme, use sunscreen, wear a hat and spend midday in the shade.

Autumn cools down gradually: September is still hot, October averages 28°C by day, and November is noticeably cooler. The rain returns in October, so long outings more often have to be moved to the dry part of the day. Beach gear is still useful in early autumn, but towards the end of the season you will need warmer clothes. For late autumn, choose a light jumper and closed shoes that can cope with wet weather.

When to visit and what to see in Ayia Napa

The best time to come depends on how much of the day you want to spend in the water. Nissi Beach fits well into a summer holiday with long swims, but at that time of year walks around the town are best planned for the morning. September and October suit those who want to combine a warm sea with sightseeing: September is still hot, while in October it is easier to get around on foot. Set aside a separate part of the day for the beach, so that a long spell in the sun is not followed straight away by a long walk. In autumn, keep beach plans flexible: in the rainy period it makes sense to use the dry hours for swimming.

Spring gives you more chances to explore Cape Greco and the sea caves without the summer heat. In April and May the rain gets in the way of long walks less often, although the spring sea is not warm enough for everyone to swim in. At the sea caves, choose a route that leaves enough time for an unhurried walk back. Shoes with non-slip soles are useful on the rocky stretches, especially after rain. In autumn these places are best visited in October or November, on a dry day.

Ayia Napa Monastery can be part of a walk around the town in spring, autumn or winter. In the rainy months, keep it for a shorter outing between showers rather than planning a full day outdoors. In summer, come in the morning and do not plan a long walk in the midday heat after your visit. The beach, the monastery and Cape Greco are best spread over different days, leaving time to rest in the shade.
