Weather in Nicosia: what shapes it and what to expect
Nicosia is hotter in summer and cooler on winter nights than the coast: in July the average daytime temperature is 38°C. The sea breeze does less to ease the daytime heat here.
01What shapes the weather in Nicosia
The capital lies on the Mesaoria plain between the Troodos Mountains and the Kyrenia range. There is no sea nearby, so its influence is weaker than in Larnaca or Limassol, where the water warms up and cools down slowly and softens the weather on the coast. In Nicosia the land heats up more strongly during the day and cools down faster after sunset. As early as April the average daytime temperature is 25°C and the night-time temperature 11°C. You will notice a clear difference between a sunny midday and a late return home.
The mountains around the plain affect how the air moves and where the rain falls, but the capital remains a lowland city that heats up strongly in summer. In winter the distance from the sea is felt most after a clear evening: the night can be colder than you would expect after a warm day. In clear winter weather the temperature here sometimes drops close to freezing, though frosts are rare.
02What each season brings
The summer heat in Nicosia comes with very little rain. July averages just 3 mm, so there may be no rainy break from the hot streets. During the day, sunny spots feel very different from shaded ones, and outdoor plans often have to be moved to cooler hours. Dust haze is possible when the wind brings in dust from the deserts: the sky loses its clarity and the outlines of distant mountains become blurred. This haze can appear over the capital even when there is no local rain.
In winter, heavy showers with thunderstorms and strong winds are possible. December brings 84 mm of rain, and a wet, windy day feels very different from sunny winter weather. Low night temperatures combined with rain make open courtyards chilly. Strong winter winds can bring waves to the coast, including near Larnaca, where people from the capital go to the sea. In Nicosia itself such weather means gusts and rain, but no rough sea.
03Wind, humidity and how the heat feels
By the sea the summer air is more humid, so even a lower temperature can feel heavier. Nicosia's heat tends to be dry: the hot air is felt most on sunny streets. A daytime wind from the sea can bring fresher air and change how it feels outside, but its effect in the capital is weaker than right on the coast. Even with a breeze, a hot day here can still feel oppressive.
The "feels like" value takes temperature, humidity and wind into account together. It explains why the same reading feels different in Nicosia and in Larnaca. At the same time, the sunny side of a street and a shaded passage make for different conditions on a walk: in the capital, shade makes a particularly big difference to how a summer day feels.
04How Nicosia compares with other towns in Cyprus
Of the towns on this site, Nicosia has the hottest July. For comparison, the July daytime average is 34°C in Limassol, 30°C in Paphos and 28°C in Troodos. Larnaca, Ayia Napa and Protaras are also cooler than the capital in summer. After a day in Nicosia, an evening on the coast may feel fresher, although the humid sea air can make it feel muggy. Summer in Troodos is noticeably cooler.
Winter nights in the capital are colder than in all the coastal towns listed; only Troodos has lower temperatures. When you come back from the coast, you are more likely to need warm clothes here. Nicosia gets the least rain of these towns, 345 mm a year. Even Larnaca, which comes closest on this measure, is slightly wetter.
05The months at a glance
The warmest month in Nicosia is July, with an average daytime temperature of 38°C, and the coldest is January, with a night-time average of 6°C. The rainy season lasts from October to May. Even in the coldest month, days in the capital are noticeably warmer than nights, and on a clear winter night the temperature sometimes drops close to freezing. December is still the wettest month.
The swimming season on the nearest coast, near Larnaca, runs from May to November, when the water warms to at least 21°C. The sea is warmest in August, and in September the average water temperature is also 28°C. In spring the water warms up more slowly than the daytime air in Nicosia, and in autumn it holds its warmth for longer.
