Weather in Protaras: what shapes it and what to expect
The weather in Protaras is shaped by the sea: it softens winter nights but adds humidity to the summer heat. In August days average 33°C and there is almost no rain.
01What shapes the weather in Protaras
Protaras lies on the east coast of Cyprus, north of Cape Greco, among bays with sandy beaches. The sea heats up and cools down more slowly than the land, so it holds back the summer heat and keeps some warmth in winter. In July days here average 33°C, and in January nights average 9°C. In the capital, Nicosia, which lies inland, summer days are hotter and winter nights cooler. After sunset in winter, Protaras keeps more warmth than the interior of the island.
The sea's influence also shows as the seasons change. The spring sun already warms the air well, but the water still has its winter chill. In autumn the opposite happens: the sea slowly gives back the heat it has stored, especially at night. So a warm spring day does not mean equally warm water off the sandy shore, and an autumn evening in Protaras can be cooler than the sea.
02What each season brings
Summer heat in Protaras comes with very dry weather: according to long-term records, August gets 0 mm of rain. In this season you cannot count on a cool, rainy spell when planning your day. On the sandy beaches the heat comes with strong sun: from April to September the UV index at midday is usually 7 or higher. You need sunscreen and a hat even for a short walk, and anything you do outdoors around midday is better moved into the shade.
Winter rain can come as downpours with thunderstorms. Protaras gets 352 mm a year, with the most in December, 87 mm. Strong winter winds can whip up waves and make time by the water unpleasant even when the temperature is above zero. Frost and snow are almost unknown on this coast. Dust haze is also possible when the air brings in dust from the deserts: distant views lose their sharpness, and the sky over Protaras looks dull even without rain clouds.
03Wind, humidity and how the heat feels
In summer the sea air adds humidity, so the heat in Protaras can feel heavier than the temperature alone suggests. Inland, the summer heat is drier. The stuffiness is most noticeable in the evening: in August the average night temperature is 24°C, so it does not cool down sharply after sunset. Indoors, without ventilation, the heat can linger through the night.
The daytime breeze off the sea brings fresher air and makes it more pleasant by the water, although the sun stays strong. When the wind is light, the humid heat is harder to escape. The "feels like" line takes into account how humidity and wind affect the way the temperature feels. In Protaras it is this combination that explains why days with the same temperature can feel different.
04How Protaras compares with other towns in Cyprus
For July warmth, Protaras ranks third among the towns compared: it is cooler than Nicosia and Limassol, warmer than Paphos and Troodos, and about the same as Larnaca. On a summer trip to the capital the daytime heat will be stronger, while in the Troodos Mountains the air is cooler than on the beach at Protaras.
January nights here are milder than in Larnaca, Nicosia and Troodos, the same as in Paphos, but cooler than in Limassol. A winter evening in the mountains calls for warmer clothes than one in Protaras. For yearly rainfall the town comes fourth: it gets more rain than Nicosia and Larnaca, and less than Paphos, Limassol and Troodos.
05The months at a glance
The warmest month in Protaras is August, with an average daytime temperature of 33°C. The coldest is February, when nights average 8°C. The rainy season runs from October to March, and its wettest month is December. This is the time of year when long walks may be interrupted by downpours.
Based on long-term water temperatures, the swimming season runs from May to November, when the sea is at least 21°C. The water is warmest in August, at up to 29°C. If a warm sea is what you are after, go by these months rather than by the first sunny days of spring. You can read more about seasonal changes in Protaras on the "Month" page.
