Troodos weather in November: what to expect
The weather in Troodos in November is cool: on average 13°C by day and 6°C at night. There is noticeably more rain, and forest walks now call for warm clothes and waterproof footwear.
01What the weather is like in Troodos in November
According to long-term data, November in Troodos averages 13°C by day and 6°C at night, with 103 mm of precipitation over the month. It is noticeably colder than in October, and there is much more rain. You feel the change both during the day and after sunset: light clothing is no longer right for the average temperature, even in the daytime. December brings a further drop in temperature and even more precipitation, but November already calls for some thought about what to wear on mountain walks.
The average night-time temperature stays above zero, so frosty nights are not normal for this month, although the odd frost is possible. It is too early to count on enough snow for skiing: snow in these mountains belongs to the winter season, and the usual skiing season on Mount Olympus starts later. On a mountain walk November feels cool, especially in the rain and towards evening.
02November in Troodos and other towns in Cyprus
In November Troodos is cooler by day and by night than all the other Cypriot towns listed here. Daytime temperatures are noticeably higher in the capital, Nicosia, and in Paphos and Larnaca, and Limassol is warmer still by day. Ayia Napa and Protaras are also warmer than Troodos.
At night the gap is widest with Limassol and narrowest with Nicosia. Troodos gets more precipitation over the month than any of these towns: even Limassol, which has more rain than the other towns on the list, gets less than Troodos.
03What to wear and what to do
Add a hooded rain jacket to your jumper or fleece: November rain can change conditions while you are out on a walk. For an early start and an evening return you will need warm trousers and closed shoes. In the pine forests of Troodos, wear boots with a deep-tread sole, as wet pine needles and rocks can be slippery. Plan longer hikes for the warmer daytime hours, and after rain shorten your route if the trail has turned muddy.
For the drive up into the mountains, pack a warm jacket where you can reach it as soon as you arrive. Leave your ski gear at home in November: the usual skiing season is still ahead. A rainy day is a good time to visit the painted churches of Troodos and spend less time out in the open; they are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Climate in Troodos
Troodos has a mountain climate: summer days reach about 28°C, and in winter there is snow. It is cooler and wetter here than on the coast of Cyprus, and to swim you have to go down to the sea.
What the climate of Troodos is like
Troodos lies among the mountains in the centre of Cyprus, close to the island's highest peak, at an altitude of about 1,710 m. Because of the altitude it is noticeably cooler here than in the coastal towns. Of the Cypriot towns covered on this site, Troodos has the coolest July and the coldest winter nights. The summer difference from the capital, Nicosia, is especially marked. The long-term averages for the area are based on data from the Prodromos station in the Troodos Mountains (1,380 m).
Troodos gets 791 mm of precipitation a year, the most of any of these towns. The wettest month is December, with 170 mm. The rainy period runs from October to June, although the amount varies a lot from month to month. According to the long-term averages, no month is completely dry. Winter cold here brings frosty nights and snow, so if you are booking accommodation for a winter stay, check that it has heating.
Winter in the mountains: snow and frosty nights
The coldest nights come in February, when the average night-time temperature falls to zero. Snow falls in the mountains in winter, but when skiing can start depends on when it settles. Mount Olympus has ski slopes, and the usual season runs from January to March. If snow is the main reason for your trip, check the snow cover and whether the slopes are open before you set off. For walking on snowy ground you need winter footwear with a deep-tread sole.
If you drive up from the coast in winter, be ready for much colder conditions at the top. Mountain roads can have snow and ice, especially after a frosty night. Check in advance whether the stretch of road you need is open and whether snow chains are required. Don't plan a tight schedule: everything takes longer on a snowy road. Charge your phone before you leave, and put anything that could get wet in a waterproof bag.
Troodos weather by season
In winter the days are cold, and at night the temperature gets close to zero and can drop below it. This is the season with the heaviest precipitation, and in the mountains some of it falls as snow. Even after a sunny morning, be prepared for the cold that comes after sunset. For a winter day outdoors, choose a padded waterproof jacket. In spring the mountains warm up gradually: in April the average is 15°C by day and 6°C at night. There is less rain, but early spring is still cool, especially in the mornings. For a spring walk, wear a fleece under a light rain jacket. Longer routes are best left until the days are warmer.
In summer, when the coast is hot, it is easier to plan long days outdoors in Troodos. In the warmest months it is about 28°C by day and 18°C at night. There is little rain, but you should not rule it out completely. A light long-sleeved shirt and comfortable trousers work well for a summer walk. The cooler air does not protect you from strong sun: from April to September use sunscreen, wear a hat and take a midday break in the shade. On open stretches of a trail, pick out a shady place to stop in advance.
Autumn starts warm and fairly dry. In October days are around 20°C, but the evenings are already cooler, and by November it is noticeably colder both by day and at night. Rain increases in late autumn, so long routes need time in hand and an option to cut the walk short. A windproof jacket with a hood is a good choice in autumn. Set off earlier so you are not finishing the descent in the evening chill, and after rain watch your footing on wet rocks and on ground covered in pine needles.
When to visit and what to see in Troodos
Late spring and early autumn suit long hikes: the days are warm enough, and summer heat does not dictate when you can walk. The pine forests of Troodos are also appealing in summer, when you want to spend the day somewhere cooler than the coast. Plan your route so that open stretches alternate with stops under the trees. Caledonia Falls is worth a visit in spring, when a walk there lets you see the water after the wet season. On the approach to the waterfall, step carefully on wet rocks and don't expect to keep the same pace all the way.
The painted churches of Troodos, which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, fit easily into spring and autumn trips. Alternate church visits with short walks, and leave room to change the order if it rains. In the wet months, avoid packing too many far-apart stops into one day: driving on mountain roads and looking round each place take time. A backpack with a rain cover is handy for things you will need to get out along the way.
Come in winter for the snow and the mountain views, and keep your schedule flexible in case the roads are difficult. Don't put church visits on the same day as skiing, so you can move one part of the plan if you need to. There is no sea in Troodos, so mountain walks and swimming have to be planned separately. Time your beach days by the water temperature on the stretch of coast you choose. If you are combining the mountains and the sea in one holiday, set aside a separate day for a forest walk with no rush to get back to the beach.
