01What to watch for in Nicosia

The capital lies on the Mesaoria plain between the Troodos Mountains and the Kyrenia range, far from the sea. In summer it can get very hot here: the average daytime temperature in July is 38°C. The sun needs particular attention even when the morning feels pleasant: from April to September the midday UV index usually reaches 7 or higher.

The rainy season runs from October to May; heavy showers with thunderstorms are possible and can upset plans for getting around the city on foot. December is the wettest month, with 84 mm on average. During a heavy downpour it is better to wait it out indoors, especially if you have a long walk through the capital's streets ahead. Dust haze also occurs: it reduces visibility and makes the view less clear.

A beach trip from Nicosia comes with its own weather risks. On the nearest coast, near Larnaca, wind and waves can change your swimming plans. Calm weather in the capital does not give you the full picture of the sea at the beach.

02How to prepare for tomorrow

In spring the daytime warmth tempts you to dress for summer, but in April the sea near Larnaca averages only 19°C, so you will need dry clothes after a swim. On the coast, allow for the sea wind and humidity: for an evening by the water, clothing that covers you up and keeps out the wind is a good idea. In summer, use sunscreen and wear a hat, and move outdoor plans from midday to the morning. In the middle of the day, choose shaded spots for your stops in the city.

In autumn, change after the beach before heading back to the capital: the water holds its warmth for a long time, while the evening air is already cooler. In winter, choose clothes for an early start with the January night-time average of 6°C in mind. If you are going to Troodos, pack warmer clothes: the January night-time average there is 1°C, while Nicosia has milder winter nights.
