Limassol weather in November: what to expect

November in Limassol is still warm enough for swimming: on average 24°C by day and 16°C at night, with the sea at around 23°C. There is, however, much more rain than in October.

01What the weather is like in Limassol in November

According to long-term records, November in Limassol averages 24°C by day and 16°C at night, with 78 mm of rain over the month. The daytime warmth is still fine for long walks, but the evenings are noticeably cooler. After October the temperature falls both by day and at night, and the rain picks up markedly. This is the transition to the wetter part of the year: December is cooler still, and monthly rainfall keeps rising. In town, November is warmer and drier than December.

The sea off Limassol averages 23°C. So the water is still warm enough for comfortable swimming this month. It is cooler than in October but keeps enough warmth for a beach holiday. In November you can combine swimming with seeing the town: the seafront does not lose its appeal once the warmest part of autumn is over. This month the water is, on average, warmer than the night air.

02November in Limassol and other towns in Cyprus

In November Limassol is warmer by day and at night than Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca. It also gets more rain than any of them. The most noticeable difference is in night-time temperatures compared with the capital: nights in Nicosia are cooler.

Compared with Ayia Napa and Protaras, Limassol also has warmer days and nights, but more rain. The comparison with the Troodos Mountains looks different: Limassol is much warmer both by day and at night, and gets less rain.

03What to wear and what to do

For a daytime walk, a T-shirt and long trousers are enough; have a jumper ready for the evening. On the Molos promenade the wind off the sea makes a windproof jacket useful. As rainfall increases in November, choose closed shoes that can cope with wet paving and a hooded jacket that also keeps off the rain.

For the beach, pick the dry, sunny part of the day; after a swim, change into dry clothes before walking around town. A hat is a good idea in the sun, especially if you stay by the water for a while. Set aside a fine day for the Molos promenade: November's daytime warmth is enough for long walks. When it rains, turn to Limassol Castle, where part of the visit is indoors.

What the climate of Limassol is like

Limassol lies on the south coast of Cyprus, by Akrotiri Bay, with the slopes of the Troodos Mountains behind the town. It has a Mediterranean climate, with a long, hot, dry summer and a mild, rainy winter. Annual rainfall is 408 mm, and December is the wettest month, with 100 mm. The rainy season lasts from November to March, and from May to September there is almost no rain. For most of the year you can plan plenty of things outdoors, but in winter longer outings call for protection from the rain.

Compared with Nicosia, the capital, which lies inland, Limassol has a cooler July and warmer winter nights. Summers here are hotter than in Paphos, though, and winter nights are milder than in Larnaca. Up in the Troodos Mountains it is cooler and much wetter. Of the places in Cyprus compared here, Limassol stands out for having the warmest winter nights.

Sea temperature in Limassol by month

The sea off Limassol warms up more slowly than the air. In spring a sunny day already tempts you to the beach, but the water is still too cool for a long swim. It passes 21°C, a rough threshold for comfortable swimming, in May and stays at least that warm until the end of December. The average water temperature peaks in August at 28°C and is lowest in February, at 17°C. At the start of the swimming season, begin with short dips, especially if you like the sea properly warm.

Autumn is different: the water keeps its summer warmth even when the evenings are turning cooler. In October the sea averages 26°C, so an autumn trip gives you a better chance of a warm swim than a spring one. Even in November the water is warmer than the night air. After a late-autumn swim, change into dry clothes straight away, especially if you plan to stay by the sea into the evening.

Limassol weather by season

Winter in Limassol is short and mild: in January it averages 18°C by day and 11°C at night. Rain and damp are the main nuisance; frost and snow are almost unknown on the coast. For going out in winter, a waterproof jacket that keeps out the damp is a good choice. Spring is warm, with less and less rain and drier days as summer approaches. Long walks are already pleasant during the day, but it gets noticeably cooler after sunset. In spring a long-sleeved shirt is practical, as you can roll up the sleeves in the midday sun. After rain, choose shoes with soles that grip well on wet surfaces.

Summer here outlasts the calendar: on average the days stay hot from June to September. In August it is 34°C by day and 25°C at night, so the evening does not always bring the cool you hope for. In midsummer there is practically no rain. On a summer day, wear loose linen clothes that cover your shoulders. The UV index is very high, so you need sunscreen and a hat, and midday is best spent in the shade. Move long outdoor tasks to the morning, and indoors, shade the windows from direct sun.

Autumn starts with summer weather, and in October it is still 28°C by day. The evenings gradually get cooler, and November brings noticeably more rain. A light jumper is enough for an autumn evening after a warm day. Early in the season you can stay out for hours without a break for the midday heat, as long as the day is not too hot. In late autumn, allow for shorter outings between showers and don't plan to spend the whole day outdoors.

When to visit and what to see in Limassol

If swimming is the main point of your holiday in Limassol, choose summer or early autumn. August and September suit those who like the water especially warm; October works well for combining the beach with longer walks. You can give Kourion Beach a day of its own, without crowding it with sightseeing. At the height of the heat, split your beach time into a morning and an evening session and spend the middle of the day indoors. Don't try to see all the well-known sights straight after a few hours in the sun.

Spring and autumn are good seasons for ancient Amathus and Kourion: walking among the ruins is more pleasant without the summer heat. Allow enough time to stop and look at the details without rushing. In summer, start these visits in the morning and pick just one major site a day. The Molos promenade suits an unhurried evening walk after the beach, and in the cooler months you can walk there during the day too. Comfortable shoes are especially useful at the archaeological sites.

In the rainy months, keep your plans flexible: make Limassol Castle the main goal of a short outing and add Molos when the weather lets you stay outside longer. Save the trip to the open-air ruins for a dry day, as wet stone calls for care. December, with the most rain, is the least suited to a packed outdoor programme. To get to know the town in winter, plan short walks with the option of waiting out the rain indoors.
